Alaska Airlines has over 90 years of history, including several name changes and an acquisition of its regional carrier, Horizon Air. The airline might be well-recognized for the “Smiling Eskimo” brand on its planes or its Boeing-dominated fleet that was involved in the terrifying door plug blowout in 2024. According to the Alaska Air Group website, the airline’s fleet includes 238 Boeing 737 planes and the younger 86 Embraer 175 planes.
Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 flew from Portland, Oregon, on January 5, 2024, heading for Ontario International Airport. The Boeing 737 Max lost its rear door panel twenty minutes into the flight. From videos of passengers, a massive hole in the plane was visible while flying at 16,000 feet. According to USA Today, the investigation later revealed that four bolts that were supposed to secure the panel were missing.
Two months after the incident, over 62 lawsuits had already been filed against Alaska Airlines and Boeing. According to CBS News, one of the lawsuits was for $1 billion, alleging the airlines and the manufacturer were negligent. The lawsuits also claimed that passengers suffered severe "mental, emotional, and psychological injuries," including post-traumatic stress. While initial published reports stated that the plane landed back in Portland, the lawsuit also claimed that passengers suffered physical injuries, including bleeding in the ears due to the sudden change in pressure.
As to how a Boeing 737 plane with missing bolts made its way to Alaska Airlines from the Boeing factory in Washington, CNN reported seven months later that Boeing admitted in a hearing that they still had no idea.
