Endeavor Air is a regional airline operating as a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines under the name ‘Delta Connection’. The airline company currently operates 130 jets as of date and provides flights for 120 cities in the United States and six cities internationally. Their fleet is composed of 121 MHI RJ RDJ-900 units (considered the largest in the world) and 9 MHI RJ CRJ-700 units, serving more than 15 million passengers each year. The airline company has been operational since June 1985 under the name Express Airlines I and finally settled on Endeavor Air in August 2013.
Last February 17, 2025, one of Endeavor Air's CRJ-900 aircraft carrying 76 passengers and four crew members from Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport crash-landed upside down upon arrival at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The Delta Connection flight 4819 accident occurred at 3:30 PM, resulting in injuries to 21 passengers. There were no reported fatalities. As of the morning of February 19, 2025, 20 of the 21 injured passengers were discharged from the hospital.
According to recent developments, Toronto already had extreme weather conditions days before the incident. However, the weather was reportedly clear on the day of the incident. The airline company has also reassured the public that their flight crew is qualified and certified by US Federal regulations.
A previous accident occurred last September 10, 2024, involving a collision between the right wing of a Delta Air Lines Airbus A350-941 and the tail of an Endeavor Air CRJ-900 while the former was taxiing on the runway preparing for takeoff. The only injury reported was of a flight attendant aboard the CRJ craft. Based on the statements from the crew, they complied with all instructions. According to the NTSB, the investigation regarding the root cause of the collision may still take a couple of years to conclude.
Delta and its representatives have been coordinating with those involved in the Flight 4819 crash. They are continually providing support to customers and employees, initially offering $30,000 for each passenger aboard the aircraft. However, days after the offer, two lawsuits were filed against Delta.
One of the injured passengers, Hannah Krebs, was "violently thrown" into the cabin as the plane crashed and went upside down. She claims that she has been suffering extreme distress and acquired multiple injuries from the crash. Another passenger, Marthinus Lourens, filed a separate lawsuit after suffering injuries to the head, neck, back, and knees and was soaked with jet fuel. As of February 21, many passengers are still reaching out, and a class action may be filed against Delta Air Lines.
While air travel remains one of the most common forms of transportation, there is no denying that accidents can still happen. In fact, since the beginning of 2025, there have been three reported cases of plane accidents in the United States that resulted in the deaths of 78 individuals. Data from the NTSB shows that 2,899 aviation accidents occurred from 2023 to 2024, but only 552 were considered fatal. The Board is still confident that air travel remains safe.
