United Airlines greeted early 2025 with a Boeing delivery, making them the airline with the largest fleet in the world with over a thousand planes. The airline company joins a few other American airline companies in the “biggest airlines in the world” list. With more seats offered and more frequent flights through the years, United Airlines has also seen a significant number of accidents, including the tragic events on September 11, 2001.
On February 2, 2025, a United Airlines flight that was bound for New York was evacuated after smoke and fire were seen coming from the right wing due to engine failure. While there were no injuries among passengers, one published video has shown the emotional distress suffered by people on the flight while Airbus A319 was speeding down the runway.
Similarly, in May of 2024, another United Airlines flight takeoff was halted because of engine fare. No one was injured among the 148 passengers onboard.
The crash of Flight 232 in Iowa in 1989 remains one of the most tragic aviation accidents in history. The second engine of the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 exploded while the plane was at 37,000 feet. The crash left 112 dead. Multiple lawsuits were filed, including a wrongful death lawsuit against United Airlines that reached up to $25 million in settlement. The manufacturers, McDonnell Douglas Corp. and General Electric Co., agreed to the settlement before a trial was held, according to Chicago Tribune.
More recently, at least two passengers sued United Airlines when a Boeing 777 had to take an emergency landing due to, yet again, engine failure. Each lawsuit is asking for amounts greater than $50,000 for “personal, emotional, and financial” damages, according to the Associated Press.
If you have been on a United Airlines flight where an engine failure occurred, or a part of the plane caught fire, you may be eligible for compensation for personal and emotional distress suffered, along with costs and damages caused by deplaning.
If you had been injured during the accident, you may have a strong case for a personal injury claim. If you lost a family member in an unfortunate incident, especially if negligence from United Airlines or the plane’s manufacturer can be proven, immediate family members may file a wrongful death claim.
When boarding commercial flights, we trust airlines to bring us safely to our destinations through the safest transportation in the world. Unfortunately, when negligence is involved on the part of the airlines or manufacturer, many lives are at risk.
