WestJet is the second biggest airline company in Canada. Its headquarters is located in Calgary and has been operating since 1996. They started with only three aircraft in their fleet, flying only to five destinations. As of date, the company’s fleet size is now at 136, offering flights to more than 100 cities in 30 countries.
In March 2024, a WestJet plane lost cabin pressure and had to descend 10,000 feet 45 minutes before arriving at Vancouver. The crew, along with 88 passengers, safely landed at their destination without injuries or damages.
One of their aircraft had to undergo a maintenance check in October 2018 after the flight crew noticed a burning smell in the cabin and declared a PAN-PAN emergency. They safely landed in Vancouver after 20 minutes and discovered that there was an oil leak. The plane underwent service maintenance shortly after.
A similar incident also occurred in November 2011 on a flight to Cancun, Mexico, where a flight carrying 159 people from Vancouver had to reroute to Amarillo, Texas, to find the source of the smell. WestJet had to send a rescue plane as a replacement to transport the passengers to Cancun.
Airplane incidents and accidents can be caused by multiple factors – one of which includes mechanical failure. While most of these problems can be remedied, those that remain undetected can be the cause for worse problems in future flights.
Situations like these can become hazardous and may lead to aviation accidents if left unresolved. Injured passengers in such accidents may be eligible for compensation for damages incurred. Sean M.
